The innovative K\u0101lida Sant Pau in Barcelona project was launched with the goal of supporting people with cancer, their caregivers and relatives throughout the process, within a specially-designed architectural environment.  <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The role of therapeutic architects is to \u201cdesign\u201d and \u201creimagine\u201d an environment so that it contains as few \u2018obstacles\u2019 as possible. The environment is suddenly an olistic factor that supports their health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therapeutic architecture was born from healthcare architecture, in recent time its influences has left the medical world and entered the \u201ccivil” society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This recognition of the importance of space <\/strong>encouraged environmental professionals, academics, and clinicians to come together and re-evaluate the importance of architecture”. Most importantly, how the design of the surrounding environment itself could support both the medical professionals and the patients contained within them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new philosiphical approach bringing architecture itself to play a significant role <\/strong>not just as a physical location, but also as a “mechanism” for power and control. It was not until the medical community began to notice that space itself \u2014 physical space \u2014 held more value than was initially thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Then there is lighting and colors; therapeutic architects prefer to take advantage of natural daylight<\/strong> whenever they can and use a soft, fresh and bright color palette<\/strong> in accordance with the “domestic” environment. Good views of nature<\/strong> are also considered very important, along with clean air, and adjustable air conditioning for thermal comfort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

K\u0101lida offers emotional, practical and social support<\/strong>. It is free and available to anyone with cancer and is located close to where they receive treatment – the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau \u2013 This unique programme is based on the experience of the Maggie\u2019s organisation<\/strong>, whose global network (founded in the UK) K\u0101lida belongs to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
