Material loft in Milan

In one of Milan’s emerging areas, a former workshop-garage has been transformed into a contemporary and highly material home. The project by architect Virginia Ministeri and interior designer Alessandro Spagliardi of Studio Place stems from the desire to rethink an industrial space in a domestic key, maintaining the original character of the place but intertwining it with a new quality of living.

The heart of the home is a central courtyard, which now serves as a garden and patio, around which the various functions of the home are arranged. The sleeping and living areas are visually and functionally intertwined, thanks to the careful design of the openings and internal connections. The idea was to be able to experience the courtyard from multiple perspectives and rooms, transforming it into a space of continuous connection between inside and outside.

Inside, the design focuses on the layering of materials, creating a dialogue between memory and contemporaneity. Terrazzo, a reference to old Milan, meets warm and enveloping walnut wood, while a spectacular suspended staircase in oxidized iron introduces an element of lightness and verticality. The design challenge was precisely that of orchestrating such diverse materials, linking them in a coherent and fluid narrative.

“The furnishings,” says architect Virginia Ministeri, “mitigate the bold character of the materials; there are many details that define an evident tailor-made approach. All the combinations find their balance in the overall view, best seen at dusk, when the space lights up like a lantern of peace in the frenzy of Milan.”

Listone Giordano’s Desir parquet flooring, chosen for the common areas and sleeping quarters, contributes decisively to the warm and enveloping atmosphere of the interiors. Its soft tones and the texture of the wood interact harmoniously with the architectural vocabulary of the loft, characterized by a deliberately heterogeneous but balanced palette of materials.

The parquet thus becomes an element of continuity and intimacy, capable of contrasting and at the same time enhancing the metallic and mineral surfaces present in the other rooms of the house. Its extensive use contributes to giving unity and rhythm to the space, emphasizing the domestic and welcoming character of the project.

In this project, the redevelopment of a productive space is transformed into a reflection on the theme of contemporary living, where materials, light, and the relationship between spaces construct a new idea of urban comfort.
