Heritage Carrel: architecture that preserves its roots

Heritage Carrel is more than a restoration project: it is a family story, a journey through generations and deep-rooted origins. Nestled among the peaks of Valtournenche, the intervention by architect Leonardo Macheda blends discreetly and respectfully into the natural setting, revealing an architecture that intertwines memory, innovation, and material research.

The rural dwelling, once belonging to the Carrel family — renowned Alpine Guides of the valley — is reinterpreted as a place where mountain identity meets a contemporary language. The project does not merely preserve history; it renews it, creating an intimate dialogue between the surrounding landscape and the built space.

Natural elements flow into the interiors, transforming into living matter: rocks become seats, meadows unfold as carpets, and Alpine panoramas are reflected in the furnishings through shapes and tones inspired by the surrounding nature.

The tree trunks embracing the house reappear in the interior flooring, made with Biscuit Large 5 Civita oak parquet by Listone Giordano, creating a continuous dialogue between the forest and domestic space.

The entrance at the basement level — the starting point of the museum itinerary dedicated to the Carrel family — welcomes visitors with the pure white of snow, evoking winter. As one ascends to the upper floors, the spaces narrate the passing of the seasons through colors, textures, and materials that modulate light and atmosphere.

In Heritage Carrel, architecture becomes a measured gesture: formal simplicity both respects and enhances the existing structure, while the original stone turns into a “skin” that wraps glass and steel volumes, achieving a balance between tradition and contemporaneity.

Today, the residence stands as an exclusive mountain retreat, featuring three suites with private bathrooms, a spacious living area with kitchen, a state-of-the-art cinema room, a fitness area, and a panoramic wellness zone with sauna and whirlpool bath. A high-altitude refuge where luxury comfort meets the authentic strength of the mountains.
