Nui

Nui
Nui,
A visual seam
between past and present
Nui is the new Natural Genius collection by architect Piero Lissoni. This wood flooring brings together style, aesthetics, and artisanal knowledge, while also creating connections between design and nature, between creativity and minimal spirituality. A direct dialogue with nature transforms wood into a decorative element laid without artifice.

This project was born from the idea of the beauty and dignity of these large wooden boards that bring to mind what they once were—trees.
Piero Lissoni
I thought of this joinery as if these trees I lay on the floor were becoming furniture.”
The inspiration: a historical journey
Nui, from the Japanese word for “to sew,” perfectly captures the spirit of this project, which reflects on the concept of connection through a minimal gesture that evokes Japanese culture and the art of Sashimono—the system of dry wood joinery that literally means “things joined.”
The practice of building without glue or nails has ancient roots: it is believed to have originated between the 10th and 12th centuries, about a thousand years ago, when the system of joints was imported from China and further developed in Japan into a complex array of solutions. It is estimated that there are more than 400 possible wooden joints, used in everything from palaces and temples to homes and furnishings.

The uniqueness of Nui
This collection distinctly bears the delicate touch of Piero Lissoni, who designs a minimalist line that turns simplicity into something unique and timeless. The “seam” becomes an aesthetic element that surprises at first glance with its purity and elegance—able to transcend trends and stand as a timeless decorative solution.
A stylistic signature that doesn’t tire but rather enchants; one that conveys peace and tranquility while capturing the essence of the craftsmanship of ancient master woodworkers.
