A renovation project by Spagnulo&Partners

In the heart of Sorrento, Hotel Ara Maris reimagines Mediterranean hospitality with contemporary elegance. An urban retreat overlooking the Gulf, where natural materials and refined design coexist in perfect harmony.

The artistic direction was guided by several key elements: the location, the presence of a large inner garden, the direct view of the Gulf from most rooms, the panoramic rooftop, and the central role of light and color.

In collaboration with Galleria Nicola Pedana, the hotel will host temporary exhibitions and seasonal rotating artworks — a concept that transforms Ara Maris into a true cultural hub, open also to the public. The first featured artists will be Luigi Mainolfi and Marco Gastini.

The exteriors embody continuity between interior and exterior. At the rear, a garden of approximately 2,000 square meters, with organic lines, is home to a rich variety of botanical species—including citrus trees, palms, and a monumental magnolia—selected in collaboration with local nurseries. Natural materials such as stone, wood, and ceramics are integrated into the landscape design. At the center of the garden is an ellipsoidal swimming pool over 30 meters long, surrounded by contemporary furnishings and coordinated flooring.

The entire project is based on a contemporary interpretation of Sorrento’s identity. The colors and materials evoke the local culture, with clear references to Campania tradition. Handcrafted ceramics, made from terracotta, are the protagonists in the bedrooms and bathrooms, with coverings and “ceramic carpets” designed by the studio and available to order, in shades ranging from blue to red.

The floors alternate between shaded woods inspired by maritime tradition—including the Listone 140 Cannella model from the Classica collection in Michelangelo Oak by Listone Giordano and neutral stones, in a material dialogue between warmth and sobriety. The raw fabrics, in shades of blue, green, and red, recall ancient Sardinian craft techniques, such as those of Mariantonia Urru. Vases and objects made by local artisans, often based on designs by the studio, complete an authentic and contemporary setting.
